Academician Chang-Hsien Yang was invited to deliver a lecture titled “Unraveling the Mystery of Floral Beauty” at the Academia Sinica President Ta-Yu Wu Science Popularization Lecture Series

Why can flowers be so beautiful and vibrant, with endlessly changing colors?

It turns out there’s a hidden “genetic code” behind it all!

Academician Chang-Hsien Yang will deliver a public science lecture titled “Unraveling the Mystery of Floral Beauty” at the 2025 Knowledge Feast – President Ta-Yu Wu Science Popularization Lecture Series hosted by Academia Sinica, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The talk will lead the audience into a fascinating “world of flowers,” introducing the unique labellum (lip) structure of orchids and a regulatory mechanism known as the “perianth code.”

By decoding the perianth code, scientists can regulate and modify traits such as flower color, flower form, flowering time, and senescence and abscission. Flowers are no longer just simple decorative items—they can be developed into more distinctive ornamental plants with higher economic value.

This also opens up more possibilities for the future of agricultural applications and biotechnology innovation!
