The strain-specific protection is a major limitation for application of a specific mild strain for the control of papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) by cross protection in different geographic regions.  To minimize this problem a PRSV mild strain HA 5-1was used as a backbone for carrying a heterologous CP + 3’UTR fragment from different target strains.  The chimeric mild strains provide high degrees of protection against the corresponding target strains.  This research has been published at Phytopathology and can be promptly applied in any geographic regions.
