[Wilhelm Gruissem] Using the NRAMP transporter as a novel strategy to increase the micronutrients iron and zinc in the rice grain

Micronutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamins are important for human health. A novel strategy using the NATURAL RESISTANCE ASSOCIATED MACROPHAGE TRANSPORTER (NRAMP) in combination with the chelator transporter synthesized by NICOTIANAMINE SYNTHASE and the iron-storage protein FERRITIN has successfully increased the micronutrients iron and zinc in the rice grain to nutritionally-relevant levels. The new nutritional trait for rice is stable in the field and can be used to breed healthier rice varieties.
